As kids we’d sit in our rooms looking out to the courtyard and if we saw anyone outside, we all ran out or someone called to them. Hence, this was like a village, like a circle of wagons with a fireplace in the center, our own cosmos! The size of the courtyard was good.  If you would live together with just three families and there was a problem, then they would all be equally confronted with the same conflict.  If we would be 100 families, then we would be anonymous. With this size there was always somebody to play with.  If a family was on vacation, or somebody was sick, there was always a group.  You looked out to the courtyard and if there was somebody, then I went out.  When the church bell struck six, the children came home, watched Sesame Street, ate supper, and then went to bed.
