Amsterdam – Berlin – The sculpture of Frieda Ysebaert
“So there were no plans. We left for Berlin with a car filled with tiles, three people and a small clay statue. Herman wanted there to be a figure or something that children could climb on and that also had water coming out of it. I first made a small model (1:12 scale) on clay and then worked out the sculpture.
The brick wall was already there and we worked with white sand-lime bricks and cement on top. We (myself and one of the residents) didn’t work with the children. It was too dangerous. We had a heavy cement mill in the square. I built it in two, maybe three weeks. It was vacation time. We were paid with food.”
